Burgundy Map

2009 ranks as one of the best vintages in modern times in Burgundy, with comparisons being made to the legendary 1959 vintage. The reds have lots of fruit with lovely soft tannins, so many are approachable now. The whites are rich, round and should also provide good early drinking. As ever, we are focusing on the affordable range (€60–400 a case in bond), where we think the real value lies.

“The overall quality is so high... in general there were few wines I would not be happy to have in my cellar.”

DOMAINE BORGEOT

borgeot The Borgeot brothers, Pascal and Laurent, are fourth generation winemakers in Remigny, opposite the village of Santenay. They strive to ensure that yields are kept low naturally and their fruit ripens to perfection.

The result is wines of excellent quality and a reputation to match—they often receive the children of more famous producers as apprentices—and both Parker and the Wine Spectator have praised their wines over the years.

Domaine Borgeot Bourgogne Aligoté 2009 SOLD OUT
Burgundy's 'other' white grape, Aligoté, can, in good warm vintages like 2009, produce fantastic value. Made from vines on the chalk soil near the village of Bouzeron, home to the very best Aligoté. The nose and the palate have lovely citrusy and white flower characteristics. Exceptional value. Drink 2011-2015.

Domaine Borgeot Puligny-Montrachet, Les Charmes, 2009 SOLD OUT
One of the very best appellations in the Cote d'Or, producing rich buttery whites with great potential for ageing. This complex and concentrated grower Puligny has a nose of fresh butter and citrus fruits, oranges and lemons. Superb. Drink 2012-2018.

Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet, 1er Cru Chenevottes 2009 SOLD OUT
Chassagne-Montrachet lies just below Puligny, and like its northerly relation produces very high quality Chardonnay with great potential for ageing. This 1er Cru made from 50-year-old vines and aged in very fine grain oak barrels is sophisticated and utterly delicious. Drink 2012-2020.

Romain Bouchard, Chablis 1er Cru Vau de Vey 2009 Romain’s Vau de Vey is one of the outstanding 1er Cru Chablis—his 2007 won the International Wine Challenge Chablis Trophy—and is of Grand Cru quality. Hand crafted and biodynamic, the 2009 is sensational: very pure, with excellent fruit and minerality. Highly recommended.

Red Burgundy

Santenay 1er Cru, Les Gravieres Rouge 2009 SOLD OUT
50 year old vines produce a wine that has a purity of fruit and a richness that can be enjoyed young; it is full of cherries & raspberries but will also age with a lovely touch of minerality. The tannins are noble & ripe with this vintage giving it an added smooth richness. Superb wine. Drink 2012-2016.

Domaine Marguerite Carillon, Volnay 1er Cru Les Santenots 2009
A delicious and delicate Domaine produced 1er Cru Volnay from the very heartland of the Cote de Beaune. A wine that epitomises really drinkable Burgundy, that will age well for up to 10 years. Exceptional value for a wine of this class.

Domaine Vincent Sauvestre, Nuits-St-George 1er Cru, Les Saint Georges 2009
From the best 1er Cru vineyards of Nuits st Georges on gentle south facing slopes and made from high density vines (10,000 per hectare, which is more than at Chateau Lafite). This is an exceptional wine that will last a good 10 years. It is elegant and rich with soft ripe tannins and a long finish. A great example of this vintage.
