Domaine de Saint Paul | Châteauneuf-du-Pape

2007

Robert Parker described the 2007 vintage in the Southern Rhone as "a truly historic and profoundly great vintage...may be the most compelling vintage of any viticultural region I have ever tasted...the flawless 2007 Châteauneuf-du-Papes I tasted...were unforgettable" . We would have to agree. Not surprisingly, it is all being snapped up with tremendous speed by buyers from around the world.

The 2007 of our favourite Chateauneuf-du-Pape, from the Jeune family's small estate, is a wonderfully concentrated, spicy wine and perfectly displays the characteristics of this unique vintage. Recently awarded 90 points by  the Wine Spectator it is excellent value for money . The only drawback is we only have 200 cases.

Our tasting notes
A deep, dark red in colour. The nose is explosive, intense and complex, revealing aromas of liquorice, oregano, sage and luscious red fruits. It is unbelievably concentrated, rich and unctuous, filling the mouth with intense flavours of cherry, red fruits and spicy notes, and has a finish that goes on and on. A wonderful wine that will last for at least another 10 years.

About Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the most important and variable appellation in terms of quality in Southern Rhône. Originating with the Avignon papal court in the 14th Century, the present very strict rules including no chaptalisation (external sugar addition) were drawn up by the baron Le Roy in the 1920's, whose Château Fortia vineyard is next door to Domaine St Paul.

At its best Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a glorious rich long lived wine, the finest expression of the formidable Grenache grape which by the end of the 20th Century has become the world's 2nd most widely planted granted variety.

What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape so special? Firstly, the geography: Châteauneuf-de-Pape sits on a series of raised terraces ten miles north of Avignon and on the left bank of the Rhône. Then there are three types of soil: sand, limestone and the archetype reddish clay with glacial deposits in the form of pudding stones. Thirdly, the fourteen different grape varieties, eight red and six white. A key feature in the wines is complexity of flavour and the best wines are often those made from a raft of different varieties and grown on each soil type.
