Château de Fayolle Red | Bergerac

2010

NEW

A terrific red from the Bordeaux/Bergerac border. Both the vineyard and Château de Fayolle date from the 15th C, just after 300 years of English Plantagnet rule came to an end in Aquitaine. Ch. Fayolle's limestone and chalk terroir on a tributuary of the Dordogne, the Marmant, with its deliberately low yield, no herbicides and consummate winemaking by Jean Gazaniol in oak barrels, is, we believe, one of the finest in the Bergerac appellation. Medaille d'Or in 2011. A delicious and much cheaper alternative to red Bordeaux. Extraordinary value for money.

Our tasting notes
Luscious flavours from ripe merlot grapes combine with the cabernets to give the wine real backbone. The barrel aging gives complexity and longevity to make a very decent red that should make many of its more famous Bordeaux neighbours blush. Excellent value for money.
Wine data
Grape variety: Principally Merlot, with some Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon
Appellation: Bergerac
Alcohol: 14.5%
About Bergerac
The wines of Bergerac in the image of and lying next to Bordeaux are increasingly seen as a fine and affordable alternative to Bordeaux itself.

Château de Fayolle has reduced both the size and yield of its vineyard, in order to make wines of great delicacy and charm. New head winemaker Jean Gazaniol studied with the renowned Emile Peynaud, who is widely credited with revolutionizing winemaking in the latter half of the 20th Century.
