A top St Emilion Grand Cru at a seriously reduced price. Jonathan Maltus has a masterful touch when it comes to the Merlot grape and this, along with his famous wine Le Dôme, is a fine example. Rich, fruit driven claret that is just starting to drink well now but will improve with a few more years in the cellar.

Our tasting notes

Blackish purple with a surprisingly forward sweet berry fruit nose. Good weight and balance. Relatively forward but will benefit from a couple of years cellaring. A very well made wine.

About Château Laforge

Purchased in 1998 from the daughter of the local blacksmith—hence the name—the initial vineyard was primarily based on a gravel outcrop. Since the acquisition additional vineyards have been purchased on both sandy and clay over limestone soils hugging the town of Saint Emilion. The six-hectare vineyard of the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru uniquely draws together the three terroirs of the Saint Emilion Appellation.

Around ninety percent of the vineyard is composed of old-vine Merlot with the rest being Cabernet Franc. Green harvesting ensures that cropping is low, down to a maximum of 4 bunches. The grapes are harvested by hand and, after double-triage, are vinified in modern oak vats. The wine is subject to consistent lees suspension during ageing to enhance the body of the wine. The result is Château Laforge—a substantial wine with a rich purple colour, elegant, and memorable.

 

Prices are all-inclusive for deliveries within the Republic of Ireland. Minimum total order is 1 case (12 bottles of 75cl equivalent) and may be mixed 2 cases (24 bottles of 75cl equivalent) of your choice.
