Brut 1415 Moingeon | Methode Traditionelle Blanc de Blanc

Special Discounts

We have, at last, found an excellent sparkling wine at a knockout price and named after the year of the battle of Agincourt—rather surprisingly for a French wine. Made in exactly the same way as Champagne itself, the only difference being that the grapes come from Vaucluse and Charentes. The perfect fizz for parties, weddings or just a glass for yourself, and a lot better than many Champagnes at twice the price.

Our tasting notes
Good light yellowish colour, a fresh nose and just the right sized bubbles. Dry, excellent fruit flavours. Good balance and acidity. When we tasted it blind we all thought it was Champagne—and it scored above the three Champagnes in the tasting. Very different much higher quality than most fizz.

Grape variety: Chardonnay

Methode Traditionelle & Champagne
Methode traditionelle refers to the old production method traditionally used in champagne. This process requires great care and patience but produces wines of far greater sophistication than those that are simply tank fermented.

Firstly, the producer makes a high quality white wine (in the case of this wine, entirely from Chardonnay), this is then placed in bottle where a fresh dose of yeast is added. Once capped the bottles are stored down in the cellars for at least one and a half years. During this time a secondary fermentation occurs which creates CO2 and hence the bubbles. This does however also deposit dead yeast cells in the bottle. This then requires the work of the Remueur (or in less old fashioned or romantic Chateaux, simply a machine) to turn the bottles very gradually over several weeks so that the bottle finishes in an upside down position. Once this has happened the bottles have the necks dipped into a freezing brine solution so as to create a solid plug of dead yeast cells which are then removed. The wine is then topped up, corked and wired.
